Discoveries/Entdeckungen

Travelling is one of my passions.  Travelling provides opportunities to learning from different people and to understanding different contexts and cultures.  Travelling facilitates critical self-reflection, self-exploration, mutual learning and understanding and, so I believe, the development of intelligence and innovations.  Last but not least, it could lead you to new friendships and inspire your thoughts. My travelling is more motivated by discoveries than by typical tourist attractions. Some of my travel projects might have looked challenging (crossing the Sahara and Central Africa in my early twenties) but my travelling is not inspired by competition or  collecting of superlatives (most dangerous trips, cheapest or fastest travels, highest mountains).

I often  seek to combine travelling with my research and consulting work and with visiting friends and family....but relaxation, surely, is also a legitimate motive.  I like to spend time with family and friends abroad, listen to local music and go to concerts, visit places of intellectual work and spiritual life. I also sometimes visit sport events and enjoy swimming and playing ball games on beautiful beaches.

I am aware of the carbon footprint of many travel related activities and take environmental aspects into consideration while travelling.  The travel blogs of my son (www.6thumbs.com) and many other travel bloggers show that low-carbon and low-budget travelling is quite feasible, at least for young people and those who still feel young. I like taking pictures. It sometimes needs many pictures to capture the moment or atmosphere I would like to memorize. I won a few minor competitions (in China) but picture-taking is not my motive to travel.

We walked in a pub with Klezmer music, no entrance fee, spontaneous get-together of local musicians.

I accompanied my wife on a business trip to Helsinki in the first days of May 2017 (with snow on May 1).

The yard of the prestigious Chicago University. I went to Chicago for a conference on nonprofits in July 2015.  Was glad to see my Ph.D. book in the library.

soziales und politisches Engagement

Ich engagiere mich bei Schöneberg Hilft e.V. in und um meinen Kiez. Wir unterstützen (ehemals) Geflüchtete in Schöneberg und in ganz Berlin. Ausgangspunkt waren unsere Aktivitäten in der der Teske Schule in Schöneberg in 2015 und 2016. Leider konnten wir nicht verhindern, dass der Berliner Senat an dem Standort  Teske Schule inzwischen eine  verfehlte Integrationspolitik  praktiziert. Das hat  uns dazu gebracht, neben persönlicher, rechtlicher und berufsintegrativer Unterstützung für Geflüchtete  auch die "Integrationspolitik" in Berlin kritisch zu begleiten.

Ich habe viele Monate, insgesamt etwa 4 bis 5 Jahre in Südasien verbracht (vor allem in Indien und Bangladesch zwischen 1993 und 1999). Dank der Initiative eines früheren Studenten von mir (heute Dr. phil.), untertütze ich seit vielen Jahren act! Orissa. Die Organisation unterstützt rund 50 Waisenkinder in Indien, zusammen mit einem indischen Partner.  Das Waisenhaus soll mittelfristig stark genug werden, um sich selbst bzw. mit Hilfe der lokalen indischen Behörden zu tragen. Das ist in Sichtweite, aber es gibt noch viel zu tun.... www.actorissa.org

...wenn es mir möglich ist und Spaß macht, dann bin ich immer gern dabei, Praktiken der nachhaltigen Entwicklung zu leben. Von Dezember 2011 bis Dezember 2013 lebte ich in der schönen Universitätsstadt Xiamen im Süden von China und entdeckte die quirlige innolvative Küstenstadt mit ihren vielen Cafés, dem langen Sandstrand und den Bergen um den großen botanischen Garten vor allem mit dem Fahrrad. Xiamen ist seit 2011 eine Low Carbon City und ein Paradies zum Fahrradfahren.
